March 29th - Birthday Present!

Hey everyone guess what I got for my birthday?

A new little black lab/shepherd rescue puppy!  Isn't she cute?  We named her Mabel.  We got her last Saturday at an adoption event in Annapolis, Maryland.  She was just seven weeks old, the youngest age you can adopt.  She is a sweetie, but boy, what a lot of work.  I've got most of the puppy duty of course so it's taken the rest of the time from my already busy day.  Still trying to get my older dog, Marley, used to her.  He pretty much ignores her as much as possible, and has given a couple warning growls when she gets too crazy around him.  Any tips?

So a year ago today, when I turned 50, I decided to turn my attention to myself a bit and use my fiftieth year to get healthy.   I took care of some teeth that needed crowns and then started to devise a plan to lose weight.  I chose the BFC because I had tried low carb before and been successful with it.  The low carb I did before was Suzanne Somers diet and you could not combine carbs and fats in the same meal.  You ended up eating basically a carb free diet, which I guess is similar to the Fast Track.   I finally couldn't do it anymore and went back to my old ways for a few years.  When I discovered the BFC I liked it because I could combine high fiber carbs with fats and have things like a sandwich, crackers & cheese, toast & eggs, a pita pizza, or a quesadilla.  To me, that was much easier to do.  I was a bit startled when I first weighed in to find that I weighed 197lbs.  That's what never being on the scale does to you.   It took me this whole year to get down to 163lbs where I am today.  I am still trying to get down to at least 150lbs.  I feel like that might be a healthy weight for me at my age.  I was 140 lbs when I got married - 24 years ago.  Who knows I may see that weight again.
Since last year I worked so hard on my diet and weight, I decided this year I'm going to try to become friendly with my old nemesis - exercise!   I wish I could find something that I really enjoyed doing that didn't seem like work.  Remember when we were kids and we would jump rope, ride our bikes, swim, play hop scotch & kickball?  Why couldn't it be that easy these days??  Now it involves making time, putting on workout clothes, timing ourselves or driving to a class.  So much harder.  BUT.. I discovered the BFC after many trys at different diets and I am going to devote this 51st year of my life to finding some kind of exercise that is fun that I will enjoy doing on a daily basis!!
Tonight I am off to the Outback Restaurant for a birthday dinner with my husband and four boys!  They have great selections in sticking with the BFC as I am a steak & Caesar salad lover.  Hope all of you guys have a great night too!

  2. Hey Beth, She is so cute. Just make sure to give the older dog lots of attention too and together at the same time might help.
That would be my choice at Outback too. Who's B-day? Happy birthday :-)

  3. Happy Birthday! Super cute puppy. Just give them time to work things out; they will. Do things that have them together but still both getting attention. For example, get a rope and play tug-o-war with Marley and in the middle of the tug give your end of the rope to Mabel. Go back and forth like that so that Marley is playing with you and Mabel at the same time and everyone is involved, interacting, and getting attention. With time, Marley will begin to get used to Mabel being around, and even begin to enjoy the interaction with her.

  4. Happy Birthday Beth! What a successful year you just had. I am sure this next year will be just as successful! Taking care of yourself, giving time to yourself, those are very important goals to have. I love Zumba, but I know it is hard for me to get my butt out of the house to go! There are so many fun workout tapes, but if privacy is an issue, that would need to be thought through. I know the library has a lot of DVD's that you could try.
Your puppy is adorable. I love her name:) You are brave to be willing to take care of one more thing!
Have a wonderful dinner and enjoy your day!

  8. Happy Birthday Beth! I love your gift how sweet. Your other dog will get use to her it just takes a little time. I got a puppy when I lost my pet and our little girl was not thrilled about it but now they get along really well. Enjoy your B-day dinner. The exercise is just something you kind of have to push yourself to do. I dont love it but I have been going to the gym for over 3yrs. I go because I know if makes me feel better and it helps to lose the weight.

  11. Aww, thank you Sherri!! I wish we lived closer to be walking buddies too! It's so much easier exercising when it doesn't fee like exercise! Walking and talking is fun if you can find the right person to go with! We are both going to reach our goal this year!
